Fagertärn Nature Reserve is perhaps the most visited nature reserve in the county. Every year, thousands of tourists and county residents come to Fagertärn to enjoy the red water lilies, which are so well known that they hardly need any further introduction.

Closed bridge

The bridge along the trail on the western side of the lake is closed for safety reasons. We are working to fix this so that visitors can walk around the whole lake.

Popular rarity

Water lilies were discovered by the botanist Bernhard Agaton Kjellmark during a visit to Aspa in 1856. He spread his discovery in scientific circles. Word of the unusual water lilies spread quickly, and the result was ruthless plundering. As early as 1905, all water lilies were protected by the County Governor of Örebro.

Mutation

The red color is the result of a mutation, i.e. a random change in the genetic material. The flowers come in different shades of color from light pink to dark red. Red water lilies are also found in several other lakes in Tiveden. In some cases they are the result of planting in the 19th century. There too, the flowers are protected.

Decreased in number

Since 1980, the number of water lilies has decreased in Fagertärn. Some studies have been carried out to try to find out the reasons for this and to see if it is possible to increase the population by planting. The number of water lilies is still lower than before, and it has not been possible to establish a clear cause for the decline.

When and where you can see the water lilies

The red water lilies in Fagertärn bloom from midsummer to the second half of August. From the parking lot, there is a 2.5 kilometer long marked path around the lake. Don't forget to bring your binoculars - the water lilies grow well out from the shore.

Accessibility in the reserve

At Fagertärn there is a large, level parking lot with an accessible, spacious dry toilet (open all year round) and information signs. From the parking lot, a paved path with a trail leads along the eastern side of the water, 500 m. Along the trail there are four picnic areas with accessible picnic tables (protruding table top and backrest on one side and free from leg lift) and several benches along the trail. Each adapted picnic table can accommodate 2 people with wheelchairs at each end and another 4-6 people on the long side benches. The terrain along the paved path is flat, while the paths in the woods east of the lake are very hilly and partly covered with rocks and roots. At the parking lot there is a kiosk that is open during the summer. The kiosk can be a little difficult to access with a wheelchair due to the steep walk.
