Håketjärnarna is a Tiveden in miniature. A forested and heavily hilly rift valley landscape. The highest point is 75 meters higher than Lake Vättern, which you can glimpse between the tree trunks in the east.

This is capercaillie country. An encounter with the capercaillie will not go unnoticed. There's a big bang when the black, five-kilogram rooster flies up. Håketjärnarna has everything a capercaillie needs in terms of food. That means insects, tufa wool and blueberry rice in the summer. And pine needles in winter.

A scent of water hemlock

On summer nights, a strange, muffled buzzing is heard from the pine forest. It's the nightjar. A mythical bird that few have become acquainted with. Moose also thrive in the area. The mighty animal has its paths in both longitudinal and transverse cracks. In the northeast are the two scented ponds that give the reserve its name. To the west is the easy-to-travel Västra Vätterleden trail.

May develop freely

The coniferous forest in the reserve is wonderfully multi-layered with trees of all ages. You'll find pine on the heights and spruce in the valleys. There are also a lot of larch trees, which actually look dead in winter. The larches shed their needles.

No forest has been felled in the area in recent times. The protection of the reserve means that the trees will be left to their own devices. Over time, the area will become a primeval forest, with lots of dead and old trees.
